PHP/mySQL
While Microsoft makes excellent web development tools for large
companies, it often does not make sense for small companies
to invest in them. I am looking at ways to bring small business
online in a cost effective manner, that allows them to grow
into larger sites with minimal growing pains. Open Source technologies
such as PHP and mySQL offer
low cost web technology alternatives for small business.
Web Services Applications (Amazon)
I began using Web Services at Healthaxis, developing solutions
involving BizTalk and xml-receive functions to allow communications
between disparate systems. I am currently looking into using
web services in a UNIX environment, and have an online store
which uses Amazon Web Services.
ASP.Net
A big change from ASP 3.0. I am currently working on converting a heavily used business application from ASP to ASP.Net, utilizing AJAX and OPENXML.
MythTV
I bought a Tivo a few years ago, and I really enjoy it. I
have considered buying one for each TV in the house, but the
cost is too great. MythTV is a linux based Tivo-like software
application. You can make your own Tivo! Currently I'm just
doing the research, but I hope to begin building my MythTV
soon.
Home Improvements
With a house from the 1940's, home improvement is a non-stop
job. I recently had a deck installed in the backyard and am
working on installing landscaping and walkways around it.
Astronomy
A totally new hobby for me. I bought a guide from Half Price
Books on beginning astronomy and currently just find things
by sight. I hope to purchase a telescope soon.
